What's the difference between ants and termites?

Ever heard the term 'white ant' to describe a termite? Ants and termites are often mistaken for each other, however they are very different insects!


Below is a quick summary on the key differences:


Scientific Class:

Ants - Order Hymenoptera (like Bees and Hornets)

Termites - Order Isoptera (like Cockroaches)


Diet:

Ants - Different species of ants forage for a variety of food types, including oils, fats and sugars. Ants are scavengers

Termites - Generally feed on plant tissues such as wood, grass and trees


Worker Caste:

Ants - All workers are females

Termites - Workers are both male and females
